Green Ways to Enjoy Sports

Many people love outdoor sports and activities, and more are joining the bandwagon each day. However, the influx of the massive amount of people taking part in these endeavours has threatened the environment. For example, when people fly to exotic places, aircraft fumes dump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Irresponsible people throw away trash while doing outdoor activities such as trekking or mountain climbing. While backpacking, campers can inadvertently destroy the natural lay of the land. Thus, there is a great need to promote and practice ways to enjoy outdoor sports and activities while protecting the environment.

First, check your local area if there are geographical features that let you enjoy your sports rather than going to faraway places. For example, if there is a beach in your locality that has sufficiently large waves for surfing, then you do not have to fly to Oahu, Hawaii to experience the same thing. Aside from lessening air pollution, you also save money and energy.

When trekking, biking, and camping, always remember three rules: one, take nothing but pictures. That means you should not take any vegetation, wild animals, or even rocks from their place. Two, leave nothing but footprints. Do not throw garbage or leave any equipment behind. Three, put everything back into its place. For example, if you overturned a rock during your trek, you need to return it back to its place once you passed that rock.

Finally, try to do away with gas-powered equipment whenever you can. For instance, instead of using your jet ski to traverse waters, why not use kayaks or sailboats? If you are using a gas-powered burner to cook your food in camp, why not use twigs and pieces of wood instead? With these measures, you would be able to make a difference already. So, start becoming more environmentally-conscious today.
